FAQs

General Travel Information

When is the best time to visit China?

The best time to visit China depends on the regions you plan to visit. Generally, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures and less rainfall across most of China. Summer (June-August) can be hot and rainy in many regions, while winter (December-February) is cold but offers unique experiences like Harbin Ice Festival and fewer crowds at major attractions.

Do I need a visa to visit China?

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter China. However, China has recently introduced visa-free policies for citizens of certain countries for stays up to 15 days. We can provide guidance on visa requirements based on your nationality and travel plans, though we recommend consulting your local Chinese embassy or consulate for the most current information.

Is China safe for foreign travelers?

China is generally considered very safe for foreign travelers. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The most common issues travelers face are petty theft in crowded areas and tourist scams. We provide detailed safety tips for each destination in your itinerary and our local guides will help you navigate unfamiliar areas safely.

What languages are spoken in China?

Mandarin Chinese is the official language of China. English is not widely spoken outside major cities and international hotels, which is why having a guide can be invaluable. All our guides are fluent in English and your local language if specified, ensuring smooth communication throughout your journey.

Trip Preparation

What should I pack for my trip to China?

Packing needs vary by season and region, but essentials include comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended), basic medications, adapters for electronic devices (China uses 220V, 50Hz power with type A and I plugs), and copies of important documents. We provide a detailed packing list specific to your itinerary closer to your departure date.

Is the internet accessible in China?

China has widespread internet coverage, but many international websites and apps (including Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram) are blocked by the “Great Firewall.” To access these services, you’ll need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) installed on your devices before entering China. We provide recommendations for reliable VPNs and can arrange a local SIM card with data for your convenience.

What currency is used in China and should I bring cash?

The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY), also called Renminbi (RMB). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and large establishments, cash is essential for smaller vendors, markets, and remote areas. ATMs are widely available in cities. We recommend bringing some cash to exchange upon arrival and using ATMs for additional withdrawals as needed.

During Your Trip

Will I have a local guide throughout my trip?

Yes, we provide professional English-speaking local guides in each city you visit. Your guide will meet you at arrival points, accompany you during sightseeing, and offer insights into local culture and history. Transportation with a private driver is also included for all scheduled activities.

What happens if I face an emergency during my trip?

Your safety is our priority. We provide 24/7 emergency contact numbers for immediate assistance. Your local guide can help with translation at hospitals or police stations if needed. We also maintain relationships with international medical facilities in major cities and can coordinate emergency services or evacuations if necessary.

Can my itinerary be changed during the trip?

While we plan your itinerary carefully, we understand that preferences can change during travel. Minor adjustments can often be accommodated on the spot through your guide. For significant changes that affect reservations, please contact your ExplorChina travel consultant as soon as possible, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your requests subject to availability and any price differences.
